The DIY Video Pitfall

Great Frustration

Pulling your hair out

These are certainly tough economic times that we live in right now.  Many businesses from the Fortune 500 giants to very small businesses are forced to cut down budgets.  Every cost is scrutinized – supply chain, fixed and variable overhead,  MARKETING, etc.  Businesses do what they have to.  In order to cut down costs, sometimes businesses are tempted to become what they are not in order to save a buck or two.  In my experience a lot of this temptation develops within the marketing division of the company.  Companies know that certain elements of marketing are crucial.  One of those crucial, must have elements are videos.  Businesses are quickly discovering that video is the new frontier so to stay relevant and competitive, they need to be developing video content.  This is one of those crucial, must haves that businesses, particularly small to mid-sized, are tempted into trying to become a video production company with a Do It Yourself (DIY) mentality.  Unfortunately, video production is not really an area that you want to DIY because of so many unforeseen problems.  I call it the DIY Pitfall.  “Saving a buck or two” toying with DIY Video usually has three broad glitches: it turns into a great ball of frustration, hurts a brand and has a large potential of actually losing dollars.  What may seem like a good idea for the bottom-line, may very well have disastrous consequences.

The first basic problem with DIY Video is that it can be incredibly frustrating.  It takes a very technical skillset to produce a high quality video.  There are so many ins and outs to producing a good video that it really takes time, a solid understanding and know-how to produce a good video.  Simple things such as using proper microphones, lighting, filming formats, frame rates, aspect ratios, white balance, compression settings, final deliverable format, licensed vs unlicensed music, Video SEO, etc, ad nauseam all add up to producing a very noticeably professional video.  There are too many things that can go wrong when shooting a video if you are unfam

iliar with the process.  Video production is a craft that takes dedication, passion and lots of learned experience to arrive to a professional level.  Its something that can’t be learned overnight or even over the course of a few weeks.  Going through the learning curve of video will bring great frustration throughout the process.  How do you expect to learn what professional video producers have taken years to perfect in a mere few weeks?  Even when you know what you are doing, video production is very time consuming.  When you don’t know what you are doing, or just learning it, it can seem like an eternity – an eternity of pulling your hair out.

A second problem with DIY Video for your business or organization is the potential of hurting your brand.  Videos help create an organization’s identity.  They help (should help) build a company’s brand.   The video needs to lift up the brand and complement it.  A bad or mediocre video can have disastrous results and hurt the brand, which will ultimately affect sales – negatively.  It’s a very simple concept – professional video creates a professional identity in the mind of a person.  A bad video creates a bad identity in the mind of a potential client or customer.  Image is everything in marketing.  That video that you spent a ton of time creating (frustratingly learning) didn’t exactly come out they way you envisioned it or hoped but hey, it’s better than nothing right?  Not always.  Imagine someone on YouTube looking at your video that is OK.  And then sees the next video from a competitor that is professionally shot looking smooth, crisp and attractive.  Do you think that person is going to remember your company over the competition’s professional and better-looking video?   The viewer will have it engrained in his/her head that your competitor is better simply because it looks better.  Even if your competition doesn’t have any videos whatsoever, you still create and identity of your company.  What will that identity look like?  Will it be smooth, crisp and attractive driving traffic to your site to search for more information and buy?  We all know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover – but it’s a basic human reaction.  Your branding is critical.  Simply put, if your business wants to portray a professional organization, your video needs to back that up.  Don’t sacrifice your branding.

The third problem about DIY Video for your business or organization stems from a dollars and cents perspective.  From a cost standpoint DIY Video Production makes sense.  With technology and video production costs coming down there is a pretty low barrier to entry.  You pickup an HD camera and iMovie and away you go.  Instant video producer, right?  Why not take a stab at it?  This is a cheap solution that very well may get the job done, but the question is, will you do the job well?  This is where the pitfall lays in terms of dollars – despite being a “cheaper alternative”.   Do you remember how DIY Video is very time consuming and very frustrating trying to learn it?  Guess what?  People on staff spent time working on it, time that they could have spent doing something else…their job maybe.  And to show for it, there is a sub-par video, or worse a completely unusable video, that had a lot of time, energy and money put into it.  How much time did you staff spend on it?  Hour and hours for sure.  The time that your staff spent on learning and filming the video are direct costs to producing it.  Direct material costs that you need for the video (maybe a camera, computer or software, other materials) come into play as well.  Another big factor for cost is opportunity cost.  Spending all the time, effort and money producing a bad/mediocre video then putting up your video up next to a competitor’s video on YouTube that has been shot professionally – what do you think will happen?  You’ll lose potential sales and the whole point of producing in the first place will be in vain.

In the end, I really don’t recommend DIY Video.  It’s a waste of business’ time and money.  Use that time to focus on what you do professionally as a company and leave video production to the professionals…chiefly Optimum Productions. [Shameless product placement]  DIY Video will cost you more than if you had gotten your video shot professionally.  If you’re going to produce a video, make sure its professional.  You owe it to your business.  There’s too much at stake.  DIY Video – Now do you think its worth it?

The New and Improved OP Website is Here!

For the last several months we have been working on a new website to cater a little better to the atlanta video production market (and the national video production market).  I feel like we do this every year, however this time I am more than confident that this one is here to stay.  If you remember we went through a bit of re-branding in the summer to sharpen up our image.  The new logo looks great.  It’s not a big departure from the previous rendition…but it is a little more refined, less complicated and clean as you can see to the right.

Official Lighthouse Logo of Optimum Productions

The New and Improved OP Logo

We have been using it for awhile now, so it may be relatively familiar.  We started working on a better version of the website as well to match our new logo a little bit closer giving it a cleaner and more professional feel to it.  We feel that the new website represents us much better online.  The site is a little bigger than the last one and has a lot more information.  It will be going through a few different phases and additions over the next several weeks…or even months such as additional video samples and categories, resources like white papers, statistics and tips, additional services and more.

In an effort to a refined branding and website, we acquired the more natural .com domain.  So you can now view our Optimum Productions website through www.optimumproductions.COM or the .net version.  Both work!  The same goes for email, you can reach us through both means.  So as you can see there has been a lot of things going on over here over the last several weeks/months.  There will be more to come like a new newsletter program (most likely implementing a short video segment), increased blog postings(rantings and riffs) ranging from video production tips to news updates about OP (there’s talk of a weekly blog) and additional resources.  We’re still fleshing everything out but it is exciting.  Stay tuned and check in on us periodically.  If you’re not already, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter, check us out on YouTube and Vimeo, subscribe to this blog, and don’t forget to check out the new OP website.  Wow..that’s a lot!  You don’t have to do all of that…maybe one…or two…..or even three.  There is no excuse to missing out on all the great things going on internally here at Optimum Productions, the atlanta video production, the overall technology/media markets and beyond.  Till next time!

Kemper America Product Video Shoot

Things have been busy around here at Optimum Productions.  The atlanta video production business has been keeping us busy.  Lot’s of shooting, editing, talking and running around.  We haven’t been the best about blogging but have promised to get better about it.  We’ll see how that goes.  We figured an appropriate blogging subject would be about our shoot last week with Kemper America.  They are a German company that builds “industrial welding smoke exhaust systems and welding safety products” (taken directly from their website).  They have their US headquarters in Alpharetta, GA.  They recently reached out to us looking for some help in developing a product video for one of their many products to be used on their website, trade shows, etc.  They have a very strong belief that online video is the way of the future and that they need to jump on the bandwagon.  They are correct.  So they have come up with a plan to start producing different product videos and other online media.

To start, we decided to tackle one product video and then move on from there.  The product that we shot is a really neat component to an exhaust system for welding.  It is a really versatile arm that attaches to an air filtering system.  Now, before meeting Kemper we knew very little about welding – so we went through a bit of an education.  When welding, a very fine dust carried in smoke is created.  This smoke or exhaust fumes are extremely toxic…ever heard of Hexavalent Chromium?  That’s one of the toxic elements that you don’t want to mess with.  Have you seen the movie “Erin Brockovich”?  Hexavalent Chromium – or Chromium VI was the chemical found in the water and was causing cancer.  Nasty stuff.  Not to hate on smokers…but it’s in cigarette smoke too!  Moving on…Welding fumes are so toxic that OSHA has cracked down on regulations of air quality for welders.  And this is where our client Kemper comes in.  They manufacture air filtering units that filter out the toxins to create a much safer level of air quality.  The focus of the first product video is on the really neat flexible arm.  You can position it around to almost any configuration and it stays put – even if you stretch it out all the way!  (As demonstrated in one of the pictures below).  It’s a neat little gadget.

We spent a day last week doing a bit of photography with our Canon 7D and video footage with the HVX200 of the exhaust arm and putting it into different positions and demonstrating its power.  Then we went over to one of Kemper’s customer’s shop, Metcam, and filmed the arm in action with a real welder.  It was pretty neat but we had to take special precautions with the gear as the light from the welding arc can destroy the image sensors of cameras, and a human eye.  For these shots we pulled out the trusty Hvx200 camera (old faithful) with some neutral density filters and played around with a relatively new video toy favorite, our Canon 7D (the Canon 5DMII younger brother).  [We love Canon's 7D as it doubles as a still camera and video camera.  A versatile piece of gear]  All the shots came out great and there were no destroyed image sensors!  Always a good thing.  We are finished with the video production portion of the project and have moved into post-production for the editing, motion graphics, voice over and color correction (among other things) and will hopefully be wrapped by next week.  We’ll be sure to post the video once it has been completed.  Be sure to check out the pictures below.

Atlanta Snow Take 2

Optimum Productions:  An  Atlanta Video Production Company

This morning was/is a great morning here in Atlanta.  We got about an inch of snow last night.  Now normally that is a very exciting thing…however I don’t know too many people who were held in overexcited gleeful anticipation last night.  I surely wasn’t one of them.  If you are not from Atlanta, let me briefly explain.  Three weeks ago or so we got hit with 5+ inches of snow with temperatures that didn’t hit about freezing for 3 days.  When it finally hit above freezing it melted a good bit and then turned to solid ice on the streets.  It took about a week to get the roads about 90% clear.  Our snowplow team consists of 5 trucks.  It got so bad the Georgia DOT started hiring private companies to help clear the roads.  The private companies consisted of road construction companies with makeshift plows…whatever works.  In the end Atlantans went from extremely happy to a heightened sense of cabin fever and contempt for snow.  It was beautiful scenery but horrible to drive around in.

So naturally there was a less than enthused Atlanta for snow.  I was quite happy when I woke up and saw the snow on the yard and NOT the streets and drive way.  It was a very beautiful sight to see in two senses of the word.  I grabbed my camera and took a few shots with my Canon 7D because, outside of this winter, we rarely get snow.  Enjoy the shots.

AdColor Awards Miami 2010

October is always a busy month for us here at Optimum Productions.  Despite being an Atlanta video production company, we tend to get around during this month.  Sometimes the trips are planned for months and other pop up rather quickly.  This was one of those trips.  We were actually at the airport heading out to Seattle, Washington for the Catholic Medical Association Conference (which I’ve blogged about FYI) when I get a phone call from my buddy over at Atlanta Media Services (AMS) about a project with Procter and Gamble (P&G) down in Miami…the very next week.  Now perhaps you have heard us blog about other events that we have done with Procter and Gamble called My Black is Beautiful.  AMS and Optimum Productions have been collaborating with the My Black is Beautiful (MBIB – My apologies for all of the acronyms) since March of 2009.  We work well together and have a blast doing it.  Our mission on this trip was to generally capture the main events with still photography and video.  P&G was up for a few awards, presented an award and sponsored free hair and makeup for all of the honorees and presenters.  So after getting back from Seattle, and a couple of local shoots, we packed back up and headed down south to warm sunny Miami!

One quick funny story – on our down I brought a boom pole, shotgun mic and dolly slider tool (a neat gadget that gives smooth gliding motion side to side and front to back) and put it into an old rifle case.  We were getting a few strange looks walking around with that and several large pelican cases.  When we arrived to Miami the TSA or someone wrote on it “Not a Rifle – Sound Equipment”.  We found it funny…probably had to be there to appreciate the humor.

We ended up staying down in Miami for about 4 days filming all kinds of things like award shows, TV show premieres, cocktails, etc.  Out of all the places that we have shot at…it was the 2nd best place.  St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands takes the crown but that was a little bit diffe

rent circumstance.  Miami isn’t far behind.  It helps that back in Atlanta it went down into the low twenties.  I was quite content in my hotel room overlooking the beach…no complaints there!  Overall things went well…we came, we saw, we filmed.  Can’t wait to head back down again…especially as it starts to get chilly here.

Catholic Medical Association 2010

Well October has come and gone like a thief in the night!  Isn’t it always like that?  Perhaps it has something to do with how sheer busy October is always for us.  I’m not sure what it is but it is always a hectic month for us.  No complaints!  We did several projects in October from corporate videos to product videos and a couple of promo videos.  Each project that we do can greatly vary in both content and size.  One of those great varying projects is the Catholic Medical Associations Annual Meeting.  We have had the privilege of working with this great non-profit organization for 4 great years.

Each year the CMA hosts a conference for the medical professionals that it is comprised of.  Each year is a different city.  We started in 2007 in Atlanta followed by Baltimore, MD. and Springfield, IL..  What do we do for them?  We provide a turnkey Audio CD production solution that enables them to provide same-day audio CD sales of the conference talks to the attendees.  In a nutshell, we burn a bunch of CDs really really FAST!  On average we go through about 1,500+ CDs over the course of three days.  We record each lecture and as soon as one is finished we clean up the audio and start burning several copies.  We typically have several copies of each talk ready to go within an hour.

We were once again blessed to be able to work with them again and packed our bags and headed out to Seattle, Washington.  I’ve never been to Seattle but let me tell you what…it is beautiful!  It is very similar to San Francisco in that the streets can be very steep and it sits right on the water but has snow capped mountains in the distance.  I don’t think that I have ever experienced that before.  On the topic of snow capped mountains…Mt. Ranier!  It is a massive 14,000 ft dormant volcano that kind of sits by itself.  It is absolutely beautiful.  It helped that the day we arrived it was sunny…it was the only day of the 5 day trip that was sunny.  It rained the rest of the time…go figure.

Being able to work in a such a beautiful environment definitely helped out a lot.  Our task can sometimes be stressful and high pressure as we have to perform very quickly.  Unlike some of the other conferences that we have done in the past, this conference had up to 4 different lectures going on at the same time in 4 different locations.  It was very important that we had a solid logistics plan in place to ensure smooth operation and also account for flexibility.  We recorded 27 talks over the course of 3 days, burned an average of 450 CDs per day and burned over 1,400 CDs in total.  In the end everything turned out great, everyone was happy and we hope to do it again for the 5th time in 2011.  Check out some of the pictures below.

E-Commerce Product Videos in Atlanta Take 2

On-Camera Talent Speaking

Roll Camera

Last week we got the pleasure of spending some more time with some good out-of-town friends of ours.  They focus on E-commerce videos or product videos for companies who would like to enhance the online purchasing experience on the internet and further narrow the gap between in-person and online buying.  We must have done a decent job because our friends reached back out to us for a weeklong shoot.  So we packed the gear and headed to a company out in Canton, GA to shoot some corporate video.  Now this chair company is a neat organization with a very interesting history.  They sell chairs…all kinds of chairs.  Anything and everything from task, executive, ergonomic, classroom chairs to folding, event, church, office furniture…etc, etc.  Now, here’s the cool thing…the owner is 23!  He started it with his step-father when he was 14 years old!!  Where did I go wrong?!  He is a really cool guy.  In fact, if you met him on the street, you’d have no idea that he runs this very large company and has a custom-made porsche from Germany.  He’s very down to earth and simple and I think that’s really cool.  It was pretty cool that one of the days that we were filming, he was featured in this Yahoo Business article.

Danny Filming on a Scissor Lift

Up, Up and Away

Anyways, we spent all week filming every kind of chair you can think of under the sun…150 to be exact.  Not only did we film office chairs but at the end of the first day we got to film some B-roll in their huge warehouse.  I wanted to get up high so that I could get a wide shot to show how big the warehouse is.  The only problem was that there was no catwalk or elevated perch where I could get this shot from.  After chatting with some people about my issue, to my delight, a scissor lift comes driving around the corner.  I was excited for two reasons:  1) I would be able to get my shot.  2) I missed the fair the last few weeks and figured this would make up for it in a weird way.  Two birds with one stone!  (On a side note, those things really wobble from side to side…I don’t get motion sickness but it makes it difficult to get steady shots).

Overall, I learned a lot about office chairs and am no longer content with mine…I’ll be buying a new office chair soon.  (I was not paid to say that).  I think I’ll be going with the leather executive high back ergonomic Chair with thickly padded armrests.  All in all it was a great shoot with some great people from Invodo and we ended up with a great success.  It helped to have wonderful people to work with from the three different on-camera talent, crew and of course all the people from the company who put up with us all week.  Once the videos have been edited we’ll be sure to put a link up so that you can see them.

Here are a few photographs from the day of the shoot as well as a short video clip.

X-Cel Contacts Corporate Final Deliverable

After weeks of planning, shooting and editing, we have a complete deliverable for our client X-Cel Contacts.  This has been an awesome project to work on and we are happy that we are finished and our clients are happy.  In case you haven’t read the last few blog articles about this project I’ll give you a summary.  Our client X-Cel Contacts came to us wanting to develop a few video assets to assist their national sales team.  They really wanted to create a corporate overview that would give a detailed explanation of their business and processes BUT in an engaging manner.  Isn’t that what we all want?  Yes it is…luckily they called the right people.  We don’t like producing boring corporate video just as much as viewers don’t like watching.  Our philosophy is to think outside the box, push the envelope and engage viewers.  To accomplish the task of creating a non-boring corporate video we employed a few creative tactics…we decided to create a spin-off of the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs.  We used a lighthearted documentary style with an engaging on-camera talent like Mike Rowe.  (Funny side note:  the talent that we used for the video looks and talks just like Mike Rowe…its was purely coincidental but funny).  After weeks of working on it we have finished , it looks great and everyone seems to be happy.  Enjoy it below!

X-Cel Motion Graphics

In a previous post we explained on how we used After Effects (AE) as a primary tool in creating all the graphics for our client X-Cel’s project.  The previous post explained the opening intro to a specific graphic.  I’d like to use this post to showcase one of the other graphics.  Our clients at X-Cel Contacts needed for us to convey their workflow from customer service through manufacturing to Quality Assurance and shipping.  After learning their workflow we came up with a conceptual design that visually represented their process.  To pull it all together we needed to mix several different elements together including live action footage, photography stills, graphical elements, sound effects, voice over and a lot of animation.  It was a bit of a challenge but a very fulfilling one.

The first thing we did was lay down a placeholder voice over track to build the framework of the graphic.  We created a list of what was needed for each scene (live action footage, photography stills, etc) then planned accordingly to capture/create it all.  Some of the live action footage needed consisted of a decent amount of green screen footage.  So we pulled out our mobile green screen studio and setup shop in our client’s back parking lot on a sunny (and windy) day.  It worked out well.  You always hear that sunlight is the best key light.  It’s true as long as you have the right tools.  We captured a couple of other green screen images (both video and photo stills) outside the building as well inside.  We even had to green screen their big manufacturing robot for a neat sequence.

Once we finished capturing everything that we needed we headed to the post-production suite to build out the graphic.  We ended up using Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro and After Effects.  It took a little bit of brain power and a decent chunk of render time.  Take a look at one of the final pieces we created.  We think it is pretty cool.

The Magic of Motion Graphics

Back in September, we started using a program called After Effects (AE), which is a high-end motion graphics program.  AE is a powerful program that gives us the ability to create 3D graphics and animations, 3D text, a great range of color correction and a huge array of effects.  It has been no doubt a fun toy to play around with.  We have used it for various projects since September.  We used AE pretty heavily in a recent project for our client, X-Cel Contacts.  We have mentioned them before in a couple of our blog posts.

For their project we needed to create a couple workflow graphics and intro pieces to make the overall video a much stronger and more visually appealing.  We naturally turned to AE to help our conceptual designs and ideas come to life.  The opening shot called for an exterior shot of their building with a timelapse of clouds flying overhead as the building steadily zoomed in and text flew all around it.  Not incredibly complicated you say…we’ll your partially correct.  The actual animation was pretty easy but preparing the assets was a little bit more of a chore.  We took a still image of their building front, then added clouds flying over the building and then placed in the text.  The still image that we took had some distracting elements that we deemed necessary to remove.

See the original Picture/Photoshopped Picture side by side

We wanted to remove the following items:  Handicap parking signs, reflections of cars, building numbers and a few other things.  We also needed to add X-Cel’s logo to the building and cut out the building so that we could add our clouds to it.   This is just one example of the power of AE [ and photoshop :) ]

Below is a timelapse showing how we used AE and photoshop to create the intro piece.
